TruxMap Tracks Los Angeles Food Trucks in Real Time

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

los angeles food trucksCluing in to Los Angeles’ raging love affair with food trucks, TruxMap — a Web service that uses Google Maps to pinpoint the real-time locations of food trucks in New York and San Francisco — has launched a map for Los Angeles, LAist reported Wednesday.

Hungry Angelenos who need a quick food truck fix can now give the map a glance to see what trucks are open near them, where their favorite truck is at the moment, and where it’s going to be in the near future. Obsessed foodies, you are stoked.

Much like the socialist society it’s themed after, everyone at this Zedong-era Chinese restaurant is equal, from the party of 12 to the lonely diner in the corner. Even the staff is like family, happily obliging requests like “can I have this vegetarian,” and “beef instead of chicken?” There is no host to seat customers – just walk in, grab a menu and take a seat. Prices are geared for the working-class diner, with dollar egg rolls, $5 to $8 appetizers and no entrée over $12. And just when you think there has to be a string … the food rivals the best Chinese restaurants Los Angles has to offer, easily butting heads with chains like PF Chang’s. Highly recommended: the Sesame & Yam Beef (or chicken, or fish…). Wei renmin fuwu!

This roughed-up ‘30s-style speakeasy offers old-fashioned club seating, a huge stage where a varied selection of world, jazz, blues, R&B and rock music entertains the crowd, and a slightly vague selection of beers and wines for your boozin’ pleasure. Don’t let its bizarre location fool you – there are no zombies hiding in those shadows – though the parking can be tricky, as the tempestuous doorman will tell you.  Wherever you are coming from, the trip is worth it for acts such as Vaud and the Villains, the rowdy big-band act of ill repute that graces the venue on odd Saturday nights. Watch your valuables, ladies and gents.

Vaud and the Villains Bring Prohibition to the Oughts

Friday, January 29th, 2010

vaud and the villainsSometime in the 1930s, a time warp snuck up on a wandering trove of gamblers, thieves and misfits, swiped them up off the streets of New Orleans and dropped them, with their whiskey flasks and stolen wardrobe, into 21st century Los Angeles. Being the charming, ornery folk they were, they found a stash of instruments, started a gigantic brass band, and now they menace the unwitting masses through the roughhewn outfit known as Vaud and the Villains. Hands on your valuables, ladies and gentlemen.

The Best Walking-Distance Bars in Los Angeles

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

dresden los angelesLos Angeles nightlife has many upsides, from the varieties of bars, clubs and lounges lining its streets to the wealth of live entertainment every night of the week.

But there’s a hurdle planted smack in the middle of Los Angeles nightlife: You almost can’t go anywhere without driving. That means forcing a friend into being the designated driver, scouring the streets for parking (or paying a valet), and spending your precious weekend nights in the car. The only other option is the city’s sparse supply of cabs, unless you happen to live within the limited range of the Metro.

California Vegan is a Thai restaurant done in signature Hollywood vegan style. Convincing slices of soy chicken and soy beef are used to create California-savvy versions of dishes like kung pao, pad Thai, spring rolls and red, green and yellow Thai curry. The quality of the food is on par with any similar-sized traditional Thai restaurant, and the order processing time is ridiculously fast. Free delivery makes them a weeknight go-to.
